SALT, Cape Town

Staying in the southern peninsula I’ve been going to a lot of cafes but SALT has stood out to me due to their buzzing atmosphere and creative, locally sourced food.

Although the restaurant has been open for less than a year it already seems a landmark in Kalk Bay and is frequented by locals and tourists alike. The menu offers a delicious range of drinks, from coffees to craft beer; and the tapas-style dishes allow you to try a range of unique combinations from pesto seared zucchini with kale pesto to grapefruit and lemon ceviche.

Meeting with the owner Nick he explains to me how all of their food is locally sourced from farms in Philipi and around the Western Cape. The menu offers a full range of vegan options and the animal products you do get a sourced from local farms.

(Also the almond milk Chai latte is amazing)

Lately I’ve been fascinated with our relationship with food, and how it is so easy to become desensitized to where one's food is coming from. Simply, it seems the more naturally our food is grown and processed the better it is for us and the better it tastes. Going somewhere like SALT you are supporting a lifestyle based on local farming and entrepreneurship as opposed to the factory farm and corporation alternative. And you can taste the quality of their ingredients in food; not to mention the small plate menu allows you to try a whole mix of ever changing dishes.

Simply, SALT offers sustainably sourced, quality food in a way that is casual and delicious. It is an inspiring little restaurant and a must stop if you pass through Kalk Bay.
